Project Details
Kenya is thriving economically but poverty is a real problem and you can join community development projects with the aim of improving living conditions and infrastructure for local people. Participants are needed at community projects across Kenya.
No matter which project you chose in which to volunteer during your stay at Akonya, you will have an important role to play and your efforts will be greatly appreciated. School children will benefit from the knowledge you impart, farming skills/passion will help bring up farming activities to curb food insecurity, your conservation efforts will contribute towards protecting local wildlife, and you will be part of preserving some of the extraordinary ways of life in this country.
The program has a number of projects aimed at improving on healthcare, education, environment conservation practices, improving the standards of living, building community schools, or helping youth with their ventures and so many other initiatives aimed at improving the communities in need.
Daily general volunteer activities can include playing creative games like coaching sports, participating in slum and community outreaches. These projects can be really tiring placements which can be very emotional but also amazing, the work you will do will be greatly received and you can make a difference regardless of your background and skills set.
Akonya Volunteer has lots of volunteer projects in Rusinga Island where you can work to help the Children and also in the farm. If you would like to help people then medical and healthcare programs will appeal to you. You can teach in Schools and you can utilize your skills and creativity to improve education and help children to escape poverty in Kenya.
Volunteer placements include help local teacher, giving lessons, creating fun games whilst giving youngsters attention. Schools are often underfunded and lack resources. You could teach English in Kenya and help with activities in the classroom and to improve levels of spoken English.
Volunteering in Kenya with Akonya will be one of the most challenging but most fulfilling experiences of your life. You will have the opportunity to try different roles and projects, dependent on your interests and skills. These volunteer opportunities we offer do not require specialized skills (although these would be an advantage), and we accept volunteers for both short and long-term placements, all the year round.
One of the advantages of the Community volunteer projects is that you are not limited to one job role and will have the opportunity to 'sample' other roles during your placement. To become involved in another projects simply inform a member of staff who will happily make any necessary arrangements.
The overall aim of the projects is one of improving the community infrastructure, encouraging sustainable activities and capacity building. The people are hard working and appreciative of our contribution to their community and will be incredibly responsive to your presence on the project.
